College Closure Due to Coronavirus

Coronavirus Update 19th March, 12.25pm
Tom Lavis, Director of Education

Dear parents & students,

As per the recent Government statement, Discovery College will be closed until further notice from 3pm on Friday 20th March 2020. As a College, we are required to follow this national policy, which affects all schools and colleges, to safeguard the welfare of our students.

Certain students will be able to continue accessing our college facilities (CR5 – IT Suite) and direct staff support at college. Students with this access are:

1. Students in the care of key workers (such as NHS, police and delivery drivers)
2. Students with an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP)
3. Students with an assigned social worker

If a student falls into any of these categories, please contact us and we will discuss with you how we can cater accordingly.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Discovery staff and our partners who have continued to provide fantastic support to our young people and their families during these difficult times.

We have been proactive in preparing distance learning opportunities for our students to ensure continuity of learning. Therefore, the current measures in place during this period are as follows:

1. Staff working remotely to continually support students – Including via ‘Google Hangouts’ to offer live virtual lectures with tutors.

2. All students have access to Google Classroom (online learning platform, specific to their course)

3. Digital submission of assignment work with online feedback available

4. Communication and bulletins from student’s tutors as per learners usual timetable (Via Student Facebook Group, Google Classroom and student email)

5. Students who do NOT have access to any home computers will be able to sign out a college Google Chromebook (laptops) to freely loan throughout the closure.

Our Google Classroom platform is already used within College and will be familiar to students, however, further guidance for parents and students regarding using these tools from home will be distributed shortly.

As a result, there is no reason why your child’s learning will be overly affected at this time. Please continue to follow our Facebook page or visit our website for further updates.

Thank you for your support in this matter, if you have any further queries please email: enquiries@discoverycollege.org.uk

On behalf of the whole team at Discovery College, I would like to wish all our students and families a safe and healthy Easter period and thank you all for your patience and support at this time.

Tom Lavis, Director of Education
