Last week, our college was incredibly proud to see three of our exceptional students, Luke Satchell, Alfie Cox, and Billie Gibbons, celebrated as finalists at the prestigious Plymouth Youth Awards 2025. The ceremony, held on 14th June 2025, highlighted the remarkable achievements of young people across the city, and our students certainly did us proud.
A massive congratulations goes to Alfie Cox, age 18, who was crowned the winner of the Supported Internship Award! Alfie’s journey has been truly inspiring, demonstrating incredible growth, resilience, and dedication during his Supported Internship in Sport and Leisure, overcoming significant anxiety to deliver a confident public speech—a major milestone. His successful placements with Plymouth Active Leisure and PAFC, coupled with an enriching experience aboard the Pelican of London tallship, showcase his development and his recognition as a valued team player. Well done Alfie!

Also a finalist in the Supported Internship Award category was another of our star students, Luke Satchell, age 19. Luke’s progress has been remarkable. Despite starting with no prior work experience and navigating challenges related to autism, he has transformed into a confident and capable intern. His hard work has significantly enhanced his professional communication, especially email skills, and he’s shown immense emotional growth in managing challenging situations, whilst being an enthusiastic and popular member of the team in his placement.

Rounding out our trio of stars is Billie Gibbons, age 19, a well-deserved finalist in the Student of the Year Award category. Billie exemplifies dedication, empathy, and maturity. As one of our Level 3 Childcare students, her work during her childcare placement, where she provided crucial one-on-one support to a child with additional needs, showcased her calm, emotionally intelligent approach and her innate ability to connect with children. Beyond her college commitments, Billie is a dedicated volunteer, supports public events, and balances employment at YMCA’s Holiday Club.

We are incredibly proud of Luke, Alfie, and Billie. Their achievements are a true inspiration and reflect the hard work, dedication, and supportive environment fostered at Discovery College. Well done guys!
